I think everyone knows that layering is the best way to control temperature – especially where children are involved. One minute they’re running around the next they’ve stopped to examine something small and interesting! The outcome, whether on or off the water, is that they get hot and cold pretty quickly.
The easiest way to control temperature in little ones is to take layers off and on. This means they can cool off after charging about, only to need another layer within minutes. As parents, we know how useful it is to have layers to peel off – so when we look for our range, we want to have the best on offer.
The best way to start is right at the beginning by having a ‘proper’ base layer. We stock Helly Hansen merino wool base layer sets that are top drawer kit. The cozy, non-itch, allergy neutral set includes a long-sleeve top and long johns. Helly Hansen’s unique LIFA® fibre technology and premium merino wool exterior provide superior insulation and moisture-wicking properties to keep your child warm and dry. Plus the knees are reinforced with polar fleece – because we all know they’re going to end up messing about in these forever! We have them stocked in navy & green or magenta & white – fashionable and functional, so everyone’s happy!
Meanwhile, we also stock the Didriksons’ Yaya set which has a unique yarn structure that helps absorb sweaty moisture and the antimicrobial technology means it won’t get smelly either!
Both can be worn to lounge around in when ‘hanging out’ on board or at home, or they can be made to work on the ski slopes or colder days out on the boat.
And then we have the Toki performance sailing base layer from Crewsaver for the serious young sailors. They come in the form of leggings and a separate long sleeve top. Lightweight and durable Polypropylene construction gives a comfortable and functional fit, with flat locked seams to prevent chaffing, plus it has seamless under arms for total manoeuvrability. The quick drying, thermal fabric is breathable and fast wicking to ensure total on the water comfort in all situations.
What’s important is that a base layer will let your child’s skin breather, keep them warm but not overheated, and above all, make them feel comfy all day. As they say…it’s all about the base!
